Oakmont Community Information on Highway 86 Roadway Construction

On August 1, Garen McElroy with Great River Engineering gave a presentation to update where the project is currently.  Following are some highlights from his presentation:

  • During the day, 1 lane in each direction is to remain open. However, lane closures could happen periodically for safety reasons and will be kept to a minimum as per the contracts that were signed. There will be an overlay over the entire project and that may cause some lane closures, but that is to be kept to a minimum as well.
  • At night, lane closure will occur and should be short stretches of road.
  • The temporary road will be removed once the project is complete.  Also, the guard rails that are currently installed were done to regulation, but they do have a contractor set to come soon and put them a little further away from the road as they notice drivers hovering close to the center line and want to keep everyone safe. This should help with this concern.
  • Devil’s Pool Road will not change, but the sight line will change significantly.  The sign and median currently in place, will be removed and brush cut back.
  • There will be an 8″ raised median as a barrier between the East and West Bound lanes.
  • There may be some utility outages briefly during the road construction, but most of those are to take place at night. At this point, most of the transitions have already taken place. They are still waiting on one utility to move lines.
  • As of today, they are 60 days behind on completion date, due one utility that needs to be moved. Once that is complete, they hope to be able to capture some of those days back and move quickly to finish.

Western Taney County Fire District, Fire Chief, Chris Berndt was present. He stated that the local crew will always take care of the residents it is entrusted to even when a big event is happening at Thunder Ridge, Big Cedar and other venues around the area. They pull extra staff from other stations around the area to help with big events like Thunder Ridge. He expected it will be easier for his crews to respond to an emergency in the area with the 4-lane road with shoulders opposed to the 2-lane without shoulders. There may be more traffic at times, but the new road allows for more room for vehicles to move out of the emergency vehicle’s path.

MoDOT, Big Cedar entities and GRE Engineering have partnered in the largest cost share award in the state under the Governor’s cost share program for economic development. The Oakmont Community will be affected by the roadway construction project in and around Highway 86 from Highway 65 to just east of the electric substation over the next several months.

Highway 86 Improvement Plan for Thunder Ridge Arena

ESS – Emory Sapp and Sons is the primary contractor and will begin mobilizing for the project as early as the week of Memorial Day.

We understand that the construction is on an expedited schedule in order to have substantial completion by September 15, 2023. This will require night construction and pretty much something going on 24/7 for the next four (4) months.

The Association has agreed to moving the two large “Oakmont Community” monument rocks at the entrance of Devil’s Pool Road to accommodate the new four lanes and intersection. The rocks will be relocated to a specific site at the direction of Oakmont.

If you have any further questions or comments, please contact the Association Office or a Board member.

Thank you and drive safe.
